Surge in Made in Britain Applications Following Trump Tariffs

British manufacturing is experiencing a boost in domestic support as new US trade tariffs drive fresh momentum behind the ‘buy British’ movement.
Made in Britain, the trade body that champions UK manufacturers, has reported a 20% rise in membership applications over the past month. The increase follows the United States’ recent introduction of sweeping tariffs, including a 10% duty on all imported goods and a 25% tariff on steel, aluminium and vehicles.
The tariffs, introduced under the Trump administration, have intensified calls for businesses and consumers to prioritise homegrown products.
John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said:
“Since the tariffs, more businesses are focused on British manufacturing representation and promotion, so we’ve seen a real upswing in manufacturers registering with us. There’s a clear link between the new US trade measures and the desire among UK firms to showcase their British-made credentials.”
He added that Made in Britain now has over 2,155 members and continues to vet each applicant rigorously to ensure their products are genuinely made in the UK.
“We also look at how they uphold key British values - from high-quality employment to sustainability and ethical business practices. Membership isn’t just about using the mark, it’s about meeting a meaningful standard.”
The organisation sees this renewed interest as a silver lining to the disruptive tariffs. Pearce noted:
“If there’s one positive outcome here, it’s the growing awareness of the value of British-made goods – among consumers, retailers and manufacturers alike. That’s exactly what we’re here to promote.”
Last month, the Liberal Democrats called for a national ‘Buy British’ campaign, including clearer use of the Made in Britain mark. The organisation has since written to Sir Keir Starmer, Kemi Badenoch and Ed Davey to underline its non-profit, industry-led mission and long-standing role in promoting UK-made products at home and abroad.
Made in Britain represents manufacturers across all sectors, supporting them in marketing their products, driving growth and raising the profile of British industry. The group also works to ensure its trademark stands for environmental responsibility, ethical practice and product quality.
