New contract extends the company's long-standing involvement with four key bridges through to 2030.
FAIRFIELDS has secured a four-year contract with North Yorkshire Council to provide maintenance and technical support for four of the county's swing bridges.
The contract covers Whitby Swing Bridge, Cawood Swing Bridge, Selby Town Swing Bridge and the A63 Bypass Swing Bridge. It includes planned maintenance, emergency call-out support, remote control system support and additional works across the bridges' mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control systems.
The award builds on FAIRFIELDS' long-standing association with the bridges. The company's involvement ranges from supplying the original control system for the A63 Bypass Swing Bridge to maintaining and supporting Whitby Swing Bridge for more than 15 years. More recently, FAIRFIELDS has provided maintenance services across all four structures.
Oliver Mangham, Sales Director at FAIRFIELDS, said:
"We are delighted to be continuing our relationship with North Yorkshire Council and supporting these important assets over the next four years.
"Moving bridges are complex assets, with mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control systems all needing to work together reliably. Having worked on these structures for several years, our engineers understand the importance of effective maintenance, rapid fault response and engineers who can look at the asset as a complete system.
"We are looking forward to continuing to work with the Council to keep the bridges safe, reliable and operational for the communities and users that depend on them."
Long-term support for moving structures
The North Yorkshire award follows a recent five-year maintenance contract for Renfrew Swing Bridge in Scotland, where FAIRFIELDS will provide ongoing maintenance and support for the mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and control systems it helped to deliver.
FAIRFIELDS currently maintains more than 20 moving bridges across the UK, including Tower Bridge, Lowestoft Bascule Bridge, Poole Twin Sails Bridge and bridges across the Scottish canal network.
Its wider portfolio of moving structures includes the Falkirk Wheel, Anderton Boat Lift and Wimbledon Centre Court retractable roof, demonstrating the company's experience with both historic and modern assets.
FAIRFIELDS has supported the Falkirk Wheel since 2002 and completed a £2.7 million overhaul of its mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems in 2023.
The North Yorkshire contract commenced on 2 September 2026 and will run for 48 months.
