Yorkshire engineers power ahead on new Northern Energy facility

Work secured by HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) is seeing the Yorkshire civil and structural engineering firm play a key role in the delivery of new office and maintenance facilities for a regional energy company.

The Wakefield-based firm is providing civil and structural engineering services for Northern Energy’s development at Marton cum Grafton, near York, North Yorkshire, which is now nearing completion.

This phase forms part of a significant investment by Northern Energy to deliver future-proof infrastructure, bringing forward state-of-the-art facilities that will support both the operational and long-term strategic goals of the business.

HJCE has been involved from concept through to detailed design, delivering extensive technical and consultancy support for a purpose-built modern head office complex alongside a state-of-the-art vehicle maintenance building. Both are being constructed using the latest low-carbon construction methods.

The project win comes as HJCE continues to see strong demand for its engineering expertise, including highway and drainage design, as clients progress commercial development schemes.

Based at Wakefield 41 Business Park and employing a 26-strong team of engineers, the company is actively recruiting and counts landowner Harworth Group and developer Opus North among its current clients.

Andrew Fairburn, HJCE’s managing director, said his firm is supporting site development with a comprehensive package of design services for the main structural engineering works as the project enters its final phase of construction.

He added: “It’s rewarding to see the vision now becoming a fully realised facility that will support Northern Energy’s continued growth for years to come.

“This is a fantastic project to be involved in, delivering an impressive development alongside a collaborative client and a strong professional team. It also showcases our engineering capabilities together with the skills and expertise available locally to help bring forward ambitious commercial property investments and detailed design work.”

The first phase of the project was completed in early 2024 and included site infrastructure and gas storage tanks.

James Illingworth, director at Northern Energy, said: “Our commitment to investing in phase II of a multi-million-pound development is a major milestone for our operations. Working alongside our in-house team and other partners, the HJCE team is an integral partner in creating a high-quality commercial building that’s rapidly nearing completion.”

Project architects are Harrogate-based SPX Architects. The main contractor is HACS Group, while project management and QS services have been provided by Banks Smith Partnership.
