Yorkshire engineering specialist HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) has secured an undisclosed contract to support the development of a major new regional transport hub.

The Wakefield-based firm will provide engineering expertise and consultancy services to main contractor Lindum Construction, which is delivering a £27 million scheme in partnership with Kirklees Council to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.

HJCE's role includes technical and consultancy support on a project that will incorporate the latest low-carbon construction methods as part of a wider programme of works.

The redevelopment forms part of broader plans by Kirklees Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to create a better-connected region and improve access to public transport services across West Yorkshire.

The redesigned bus station will feature an upgraded interior, real-time passenger information, improved accessibility, new cycle stands, a Changing Places Toilet, and enhanced public spaces, entrances and exits. Several retail and office frontages will also be refurbished.

Expected to be completed in spring 2028, the new facility's centrepiece will be a sweeping entrance canopy incorporating a living roof planted with grasses and wildflowers. The canopy will also support 96 solar panels to generate renewable electricity.

As part of the wider project, Upperhead Row car park above the bus station is also being modernised. Improvements include structural upgrades, new fire detection and security systems, enhanced lighting, upgraded entrance and exit ramps, and ramp heating to prevent snow and ice build-up.

Based at Wakefield 41 Business Park, HJCE employs a team of 28 engineers and is continuing to recruit. The company counts landowner Harworth Group and property developer Opus North among its current clients.

Managing director Andrew Fairburn said this was another prestigious project for the firm and added: “Our involvement reflects the challenges of the construction environment, providing engineering solutions that will allow the bus station to remain operational during the redevelopment phase while allowing accessibility to the bus station environment for all users.”

Gary Allen, construction director at Lindum Construction, said: “It’s great to be working with HJCE, who are providing a high-quality solution for a complex engineering problem. Their expertise will go a long way to help deliver a much-needed, first-class public transport facility for the people of Huddersfield.”
