Sedgefield-based technology specialist Kromek has secured a new biosecurity contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), alongside a series of international orders for its radiation detection equipment, with a combined value of approximately £860,000.
Headquartered at NETPark in County Durham, Kromek develops advanced technologies for detecting chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats. Its solutions are widely deployed by government agencies, emergency services and defence organisations around the globe.
The latest MoD contract, worth £250,000, has been awarded through the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the UK Government’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA). The 18-month project will focus on enhancing the detection of biological threats, building on Kromek’s existing collaborations with both UK and US government departments in this critical field.
Internationally, Kromek has received a $470,000 order from a US federal agency for its D5 radiation detectors, part of an ongoing contract first announced in April 2024. The programme has now generated nearly $2 million in orders, with potential for further agreements before its completion. Additionally, Kromek has secured new orders worth £252,000 for its D3M detectors, which will be deployed by emergency responders and security services in Japan, Canada and Bulgaria.
Dr Arnab Basu, Chief Executive of Kromek (pictured), said:
“These latest CBRN detection orders from both public and private sector customers across the UK, US, Japan, Canada, and Bulgaria underscore the global demand for our mission-critical solutions and the broad, growing base of organisations that rely on our technology.
"We are especially proud to have been awarded a new biosecurity contract by the UK Ministry of Defence, expanding our existing collaboration in nuclear security and reinforcing our position as a trusted partner in national defence. These orders provide increased visibility on our future revenue and reflect the strong momentum building in this segment. We look forward to reporting further progress as we continue to scale and deliver on our strategy.”
The announcement follows two other major wins for Kromek in recent weeks. In July, the company secured a £1.7 million Home Office contract to supply wearable radiation detectors to UK police and border forces. It also received a further $5 million milestone payment from Siemens Healthineers as part of a long-term agreement to provide detector technology for next-generation medical imaging systems.
