Dyer Engineering Ltd, based in County Durham, has struck gold at a major national manufacturing awards ceremony.

The awards, organised by Make UK, the organisation which represents the manufacturing industry across the UK, were held in London to recognise the achievements of companies from across the country that had won their respective regional awards last November.

Dyer Engineering Ltd won the Developing Future Talent Award, in recognition of its extensive investment in its apprentice programme and a structured learning process designed to equip apprentices with a broad range of skills, including digital tools. Established in 1977, Dyer is a nationally award-winning engineering partner, supplying complex fabricated and machined components to the rail, defence and energy sectors.

The judging panel cited the company’s partnerships with a local college to create a socially impactful training programme that tackles regional skills shortages. Engaging schools early, using trained mentors and VR tools, embedding company-wide leadership development, and building flexibility into career pathways were highlighted as a convincing example of how a focused apprenticeship strategy can drive business resilience, regional development and positive change across the manufacturing sector.

Dawn Huntrod, Region Director for Make UK in the North, said:

“These awards are a testament to the dynamic companies and individuals working within engineering and manufacturing. The sector remains at the heart of creating wealth in the North East and as we grow our economy there will be a bright future for companies and individuals that make the most of their talent.”

Adam Leggett, Managing Director of Dyer Engineering Ltd, said:

“You have to grow your own talent – otherwise you’ll run out of it. This award reflects the time, care and commitment our teams put into developing the next generation, and why apprenticeships remain central to the future of our business and our industry.”
